As I tried to set this up, I kept thinking how much nicer the Privia PX-130 would have been because the backside of the P85 is curved; they have the speakers on the back. So when I played it while laying it out on the carpet, the sound was muffled because the sound was all going into the floor. I placed a book below each end of the keyboard in order to prop it up from the floor, and that greatly improved the sound quality.

I then tried it on my X stand, and the strange backside shape allowed less surface area for the stand to hold it, so the keyboard slid around. You can try the L85 stand made just for the P85, but I think it's wasteful unless money isn't an issue. If you have more time than money and have the ability to put together 3 pieces of wood together from Home Depot, I think it's much cheaper to build the stand by comparing how the L85 stand looks like.

So bottom line, I'm sure the sound is great; I'm not such an audiophile that I would be confident in my critique of the sound. It's pretty good, although not as loud as I would like the maximum volume to be. I am not complaining about that or the action or anything like that. It's just the very very unconventional V-shaped back that really puts me off because if I am going to use an X-stand, I will need to make some further adjustments to the stand to make sure the keyboard doesn't slide around or wobble. If anybody can justify the speakers being on the bottom, please let me know so that I don't feel like Yamaha made a bad decision with the design. These hammer-action keyboards are good, and I'd rather have some warm fuzzy feelings about how great the P85 is instead of feeling like another product would have given me much less problems. For this reason, if I had to do it all over again, I may have gone with the Privia PX-130 or CDP-100 since I'm price-conscious and just wanted something with decent hammer action.
